Andres, a Detroit veteran and one of house music’s great unsung heroes, has started a new label.
If you don’t know about Andres, that’s fine: you’re not the only one. But you need to. Live DJ for Slum Village (he was introduced to the group by mutual friend J Dilla in 2000), he’s a member of Theo Parrish’s Rotating Assembly collective, and has been releasing solo singles for over a decade, mostly on Moodymann’s labels – first KDJ, then Mahogani. His classic 2009 solo album, Andres II, is a stunning bounce through hip-hop, house music, soul and more – and the best thing about it? To Andres, you can tell it’s all one and the same.
Anyway, the latest step for Andres is his new label La Vida, inaugurated this week with a new three-track single from the man himself titled ‘New 4 U’. From the clips we’ve heard, it’s classic Andres all the way, with that golden shuffle that’s so distinctly his. It’s available to buy from most good record stores – and presumably some bad ones – now.
‘New 4 U’ tracklist:
