Way back when in 1999, a little-known producer called Madlib was part of a group called Lootpack.

Now Stones Throw, the first label to properly release music by Lootpack – a.k.a. Madlib, Wildchild and DJ Romes – will reissue their classic first album Soundpieces: Da Antidote on March 27.

In Mr. Beatnick’s The Essential… Madlib piece for FACT, he described Soundpieces, which as well as Lootpack, features appearances from MED, Madlib’s younger brother Oh No, Tha Alkaholiks, Defari and more, as “raw as the hand drawn cover it comes in; battle rhymes over crunchy SP1200 beats”

“Whilst not comparable to Madlib’s later, more sophisticated work, it definitely has its charms and moments, not least the joyfully rhetorical ‘Questions’, the brilliant ‘New Year’s Resolution’, the obligatory posse cut ‘Episodes’ and the mission statement ‘Cratediggin’. “Diggin in these crates for a fat remix, even if it sounds wrong to thee” drawls Madlib – a glimpse of the philosophy that would drive his oeuvres to come.”

Stones Throw will re-issue the record in its original 70-minute, 3xLP format, packaged with a 7″ single titled ‘Bone Marrow’. Orders made on Stones Throw’s website will come a 4×6-inch Lootpack sticker, while they last.
