Kompakt regular Justus Köhncke unveils best-of collection Bass Ist Musik

Justus Köhncke, seasoned purveyor of fluttering microhouse and dainty electronica, is getting the retrospective treatment.

Köhncke’s repped Kompakt for his last three studio albums – 2002’s Was Ist Musik, 2005’s Doppelleben and 2008’s lovely Safe And Sound. It’s been pretty much all quiet on the Köhncke front in 2012 (although he clubbed up with Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor for an electroshocked remix of The KDMS’ ‘Wonder Man’). No more: the Cologne label have seen fit to release a primer of Köhncke’s finest work for the label.

Bass Ist Musik is a comprehensive survey of Köhncke’s work over the last decade. Older material is well represented, with early releases ‘Jet’ and ‘2 After 909’ both featuring. Twinkly calling card ‘Timecode’ appears, as does his lovely remix of Jürgen Paape’s ‘So Weit Noch Nie’. No sign of the brilliant ‘Molybdan’, unfortunately, but these eleven tracks are still about as pretty a collection as you’ll hear all year.
