Senna director Asif Kapadia working on Amy Winehouse documentary

Amy Winehouse will be the subject of a new documentary by Asif Kapadia.

Kapadia has won acclaim for several of his films, but his most high-profile flick to date has been Senna, a 2010 film that told the story of Brazilian Formula One driver Ayrton Senna, who died in a crash at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.

Kapadia has teamed up with Universal Music for the fim, while James Gay-Rees, who produced Banksy documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, is also involved.

In a joint statement, Kapadia and Gay-Rees refer to this documentart as “an incredibly modern, emotional and relevant film that has the power to capture the zeitgeist and shine a light on the world we live in, in a way that very few films can … As a society we celebrated [Winehouse’s] huge success but then we were quick to judge her failings when it suited us.”

The troubled singer died in Summer 2011 from alcohol intoxication. One of her most memorable songs, ‘Back to Black’, was recently covered by Beyonce and Outkast’s Andre 3000.
