Norway’s most infamous black metaller no longer faces charges of “plotting a massacre”.

Burzum’s Varg Vikernes and his wife Marie Cachet have been released from jail in France, according to Norwegian broadcaster NRK. The pair were arrested on Monday on suspicion of planning terrorist acts.

Vikernes will have to return to court in the near future to face legal action relating to his blog’s breach of French anti-racism laws. Police were reportedly alerted to Vikernes’ activity after the known neo-Nazi sympathiser revealed on his blog that Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik had sent him a copy of his manifesto. As one-man black metal band Burzum, Vikernes released some of the genre’s best albums in the ’90s, but he is perhaps more well known for his criminal behaviour – an arsonist who attacked Christian churches, he was also jailed in 1994 for the murder of Mayhem’s Øystein Aarseth. He was released from jail in 2009 and has in recent years lived in France with his family.
