Almost 45 years down the line, The Who’s 1969 double-album Tommy remains a pop landmark – the first great synthesis of rock bombast with multiplex-friendly storytelling (in this case, the tall tale of a deaf, dumb and blind boy with a preternatural gift for pinball). Regularly figured as the inaugural rock opera, its storyboarding strategies and balls-to-the-wall commitment continue to inspire younger practitioners. In line with their 2011 Quadrophenia mega-reissue, the band are now set to give Tommy the lavish box-set treatment.

A ‘Deluxe’ edition promises a full remaster of the album, plus a 25-track bonus disc featuring a bumper haul of extra material, including studio outtakes and Pete Townshend’s original demos for the LP. Also included is a live bootleg recording of the album, documenting a show on October 15, 1969 in Ottowa (pedants note: due to goofs in the original recording, a couple of tracks on the set were taken from later shows).

Fans who shell out for the ‘Super Deluxe’ box set will also bag an 80-page colour book featuring photos and a long essay on the album, a Tommy poster, and a 5.1 surround sound version of the album on Blu-ray. Other versions of the album include a single CD copy of the original record, a 2xCD set featuring the Ottowa bootleg, vinyl versions of the album and the bootleg respectively, and a Blu-ray edition of the original. Digital versions will also be made available.
