Deep Medi’s resident funk master flips the script on Brownswood’s jazz singer new single.

Earlier this year Gilles Peterson‘s Brownswood Recordings released the second album from Essex-born jazz singer Zara McFarlane, If You Knew Her. The album, an understated and emotional personal opus, has received praise from across the board, with a fair few mainstream newspapers praising McFarlane for her honesty and song writing prowess.

The second single from the album, the opener ‘Open Heart’, is due for release in late April backed with remixes from Swindle and Brownswood’s Diggs Duke. FACT have the premiere of the Swindle remix which you can hear below.

The London producer takes the soft original and stamps his print all over it: beat switches, bass drops and funk-inflected synth melodies. McFarlane’s original vocal remains the one constant throughout and while it’s a bit of a shocking contrast at first, it gets better with every listen.

‘Open Heart’ is released digitally on Brownswood Recordings April 26th, and the album is out now.
