CHLLNGR weds dub and modern R&B on Form of Release LP; features Blaqstarr, Grace Hall and more

The Sacramento-born, Copenhagen-based artist preps his sophomore album.

As CHLLNGR (pronounced “challenger”), Steven Jess Borth II weaves together downcast pop, R&B minimalism and dub-wise techniques for a personal take on modern soul. He released the Haven LP in 2011 and has since collaborated extensively with South African MC Spoek Mathambo.

Form of Release is his first new music since 2012’s Datter EP. Rather than stick to his DIY guns, the album was recorded at Red Bull Studios in Copenhagen; it features contributions from Blaqstarr, Skin Town’s Grace Hall and Nikolaj Manuel Vonsild, DEL and JOSIAHWISE IS THE SERPENTWITHFEET.

The album is due out on October 27 via LA label Time No Place and will be distributed by Kompakt. Stream the woozy instrumental ‘What You Used To Know’ below; the tracklist follows.
