Scottish producer draws sonic map of new record.

What do hardcore raves, comedy skits and Just Blaze instrumentals all have in common? They’re among the videos shared by Warp Records in a World of Lantern playlist on YouTube.

Earlier this week the UK label announced the long-awaited follow up album from their Scottish prodigy, Hudson Mohawke. Due out on June 16, it features 14 brand new tracks from the young producer who, in recent years, has become one of Kanye West‘s go-to sonic architects.

The playlist is released in tandem with a Guardian Guide cover feature, dubbing Hud Mo ‘King of the Beats’.

While he remains quiet on his pop moves, the producer opened up about some of the ideas that went into Lantern and his desire to make a more personal, and much less obvious, record than some of the dancefloor work he has become known for.

“No disrespect to anyone who only likes the TNGHT stuff, but as we were getting bigger and bigger shows, we were playing bigger and bigger festival stages, but to a slightly more narrow-minded crowd. In my own sets I’d play a load of ambient in the middle, or just try and fuck with people a bit, whereas people who come to see a TNGHT show came to see one thing. I didn’t want to get pigeonholed into that.”
