The musical polymath adds another Roots to his occupations.

Questlove has been hired as executive music producer for a remake of the 1970s miniseries Roots, which explores the history of American slavery through the story of Kunta Kinte. The Roots’ drummer will “create the authentic African sound and themes for the characters”, as Variety reports, for a four-night, eight-hour miniseries.

The series is an adaptation of Alex Haley’s 1976 novel about Kunta Kinte, an 18th century African-born man who was captured and sold into slavery (and the inspiration for Kendrick Lamar’s ‘King Kunta’). The original TV series, starring LeVar Burton as Kunta Kinte, aired in 1977 and won nine Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe.

Burton returns as a co-executive producers on the remake, which will air in 2016 on A&E, Lifetime and History.
