Saxophone innovator Colin Stetson has offered another taster of his new album.

Sorrow is an ambitious reimagining of Henryk Górecki’s Symphony No. 3, a “transformative” piece of music for the Arcade Fire and Bon Iver collaborator, who resolved to record his own version of the Polish composer’s masterpiece after listening to it countless times.

Stetson’s version uses woodwinds, synthesizers and electric guitars while retaining an orchestral element through a string section of violins and cellos, and features Canadian musicians Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire, Bell Orchestre) and Rebecca Foon (Saltland, Esmerine) appear on the album, and Liturgy and Guardian Alien’s Greg Fox plays drums.

Stream an extract from the second movement of SORROW and look out for FACT’s interview with Stetson very soon. He performs at London’s Barbican on May 31 and at Ottawa Jazz Festival on June 27.

SORROW is out on CD, LP and digital on April 8 via Kartel Music Group.
