Prince’s favourite young star Janelle Monae will also perform.

After throwing shade at Madonna’s tribute to Prince at last month’s Billboard Awards, BET has announced its own plans to honour the late icon at the BET Awards on June 26.

Prince’s former bandmate Sheila E. will perform live at the event, along with The Roots, D’Angelo, Janelle Monae and others, as Rolling Stone reports.

Madonna closed the Billboard Awards in May by performing ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ and ‘Purple Rain’, with help from Questlove and a surprise appearance by Stevie Wonder. BET mocked the star’s tribute in a since-deleted video tweet for the forthcoming BET Awards, captioned, “Yeah, we saw that. Don’t worry. We Got You.”

Questlove later defended Madonna on Twitter, while she responded on Instagram: “Anyone who wants to do a tribute to Prince is welcome to. Whatever your age, gender or skin color. If you loved him and he inspired you then show it!!!! I love Prince 4 ever.”

Today (June 7) would have been Prince’s 58th birthday. Tidal has added 15 Prince albums to its catalogue to mark the occasion, while the governor of Minnesota has declared “Prince Day” and encouraged citizens to wear purple in tribute.

An autopsy confirmed last week that Prince died from an accidental overdose of the prescription painkiller fentanyl. A public memorial service is set to take place in August.
