Staples references Black Lives Matter, mental health, and M.I.A in new freestyle.

Earlier this week, Long Beach rapper Vince Staples guested on Funk Flex’s Hot97 show where he took time to deliver a strong freestyle for the legendary host.

“I came through with the legendary Funk Flex,” Staples says at the start of the video, “don’t make fun of me in the comments on the YouTube cos I will find your black ass.”

Staples proved why he is one of the best rappers today, able to link both the old and new schools of rap, with a 3-minute freestyle over Raekwon’s ‘Ice Cream’ instrumental. Keeping his head down throughout, Staples rapped about the current state of the music, challenging others to “do some shit for your home, do some shit for the kids;” he then built a verse around Black Lives Matter, “if my black lives matter motherfucker start business in your hood, instead of letting fucking Starbucks in it, if my black lives matter then respect our women, if my black lives matter don’t neglect our children;” he also talked about his youth and mental health issues and said his next girl looks like M.I.A.

The freestyle appearance comes after the release of Staples’ latest EP, Prima Donna, which features production from James Blake.
