These soul and R&B singers are met with a hefty mix of grime and indie, as well.

The BBC Music Sound of 2017 longlist has been announced and it includes LA R&B upstart Anderson .Paak, Walsall soul singer Jorja Smith, London MC Stefflon Don, Dave (who recently grabbed a Drake co-sign) and West London grime MC AJ Tracey.

These artists were the 15 most nominated by a selection of 170 “music industry experts” – DJs, critics and bloggers, among others, and for the first time ever, international pundits – who listed their top 3 favorite up-and-comers in any genre.

From this list, the top 5 will be counted down daily on BBC Radio 1 starting on January 2 before the winner is announced on Friday, January 6 during Clara Amfo’s broadcast. Last year’s shortlist included Alessia Cara, NAO, Mura Masa and WSTRN.

Past winners have included Adele, Little Boots, HAIM and 50 Cent in 2003. Artists like Frank Ocean, Azealia Banks, James Blake and Dizzee Rascal have made the shortlist.
