“We are pleased to introduce two French blokes.”

In the early morning hours of March 2 1997, Pete Tong introduced Daft Punk for their first BBC Essential Mix. Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter were only a few weeks fresh from their debut Homework and by the end of the year they were already stars.

In addition to classics of their own, the mix included everything from Roy Davis Jr. to I:Cube to Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have A Dream Speech’ to Ween’s ‘Freedom Of ’76’. Two decades later it’s still a wild ride.

Revisit the mix and find the tracklist below.
