Demme won an Oscar for directing Silence of the Lambs.

Jonathan Demme, the Oscar-winning director of films like Silence of the Lambs, Something Wild, Philadelphia and Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense, has died at age 73. Deadline reports no cause of death has been disclosed yet. (Update: IndieWire reports the “cause was esophageal cancer and complications from heart disease” according to a source close to Demme’s family.)

Demme also directed concert films for Neil Young and Justin Timberlake, as well as the recent movie Ricki and the Flash, which starred Meryl Streep as a rock singer. In 2008, he released the excellent Rachel Getting Married co-starring Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio.
