About Group will release a new album, Start and Complete, via Domino on April 26.

It’s the improv-oriented band’s second full-length and their first using the About Group moniker, following their 2009 debut effort About, which was credited to Hayward/Coxon/Thomas/Taylor and released on the Treader label.

About Group is centered around Charles Hayward – drummer, This Heat founder member and one of British avant-garde music’s most respected figures. Joining him is Hot Chip vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Alexis Taylor, John Coxon, a longtime member of Spiritualized and Spring Heel Jack, and jazz pianist Pat Thomas. Start and Complete was recorded in one day at Abbey Road in London, based largely around Taylor’s compositions.

According to a press release: “The idea was that no one band member would know the songs well enough to have specific parts or be prevented from playing something like the first ideas that came into their head.”  The result is “a collection of songs created in an atmosphere of close listening and instinctive group interplay”.
