Sun Ra fans are a famously fanatical bunch, so they’ll doubtless lap up this new box set comprising twenty – yes, twenty – discs of hard-to-find Ra material.

At £105, The Eternal Myth Revealed Volume 1 not exacty an entry-level purchase, but with 400 ultra-rare tracks on offer – compiled with the help of Michael D Anderson, director of the Sun Ra archive – it’s technically very good value. Volume 1 focusses on the period 1939-59, and includes unreleased material and material from fifty 78rpms freshly transferred for this project at Rutgers University. In addition to the 20 discs of audio, the box set includes a 5″x5″ paperback book of approximately 100 pages.
