Remember the news that Wayne Coyne’s merry mischief-makers were taking on the King of New York? They’ve pulled it off.

Pitchfork report that the band have successfully completed their attempt to play eight shows in eight different cities, in a 24-hour period. The “mini-shows” took place on June 27/28 in Memphis, Clarksdale, Oxford, Jackson, Hattiesburg, Biloxi, Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The attempt trumps Jay-Z’s 2006 effort, when he clocked up seven shows in seven cities. Coyne’s triumphal victory statement is worth a read:

“To be able to pick up this silly drinking book– after all, Guinness is a beer– this funny book that when I was growing up was a curiosity. To be published alongside the man who ate 22 pounds of his own boogers, beside the woman with the longest toenails or perhaps even to be published beside an individual who has had maybe 1000 cockroaches stuffed into their ears… that, to me, would be one of life’s absurd joys.”

MTV OMA organised the madcap jaunt. Presumably Erykah Badu wasn’t there to meet them at the finishing line (although Amanda Palmer might have been).
