Despite having already enjoyed a long and rich career, Karriem Riggins is only just getting around to releasing his solo debut album.

The Detroit producer has been farming out beats for yonks, clocking up credits for the likes of Common, The Roots and Talib Kweli. He also helped finish J Dilla’s posthumous LP The Shining, and worked with Madlib on the High Jazz edition of his Medicine Show series. He’s also happy behind a drum kit as well as an MPC: he’s drummed in jazz ensembles with everyone from Donald Byrd to Oscar Peterson, and made the liner notes for Sir Paul McCartney’s Kisses On The Bottom.

Riggins is now stepping into the spotlight with his first album proper. Stones Throw will release Alone Together in October. The album will collect a whopping 34 new Riggins instrumentals, and promises to bridge the gap between Riggins’ respective hip-hop and jazz influences.

If you’re not already on board with Riggins, he recently compiled a comprehensive mixtape documenting choice material across his career. You can listen to and download the retrospective here, which features production work for the likes of Erykah Badu and Slum Village.

Alone Together will drop on October 23. One of the beats, ‘Moofy Foog It’, is available to download from the Stones Throw website.
