Nu-proggers The Mars Volta might have kicked the bucket, but both of the band’s key players have powered ahead with solo projects.

Frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala is hunkering down to work on an unlikely LP of “AM radio love songs”. As reported, long-time foil Rodriguez-Lopez has also started a new ensemble, Bosnian Rainbows. Led by Les Butcherettes’ Teri Gender-Bender, the band also features drummer Deantoni Parks and keyboardist Nicci Kasper.

As Exclaim note, the band will release a self-titled album this summer. Details are relatively scant at present, but label Clouds Hill have issued an enigmatic trailer video to whet the appetite. They’ve also recently dropped a new track from the LP, the twisty, frenetic ‘Turtle Neck’, available to sream below.

Bosnian Rainbows is due on June 25 through Clouds Hill, in vinyl, CD and digital formats. Rodriguez-Lopez’s other band, At The Drive-In, have just reissued their classic album Acrobatic Tenement, with a reissue of Relationship Of Command set to follow next month.
