Rap outsider Deniro Farrar might still be best known for his contribution to Ryan Hemsworth’s outstanding remix of Grimes’s breakout single ‘Genesis’, but he’s back with  brand new full-length mixtape The Patriarch.

Hemsworth returns the favour adding his syrup-laced 808 rhythms to standout cut ‘Big Tookie’ and is joined by FACT favourites Friendzone, Lil B collaborator Keyboard Kid, Kira, K20 and more. The Patriarch is however carried by the unshakable personality of its protagonist.

Ferrar might have tripped into the cloud rap subgenre almost accidentally, but his rhymes and delivery are a far cry from those of the usual suspects; he’s unusual for sure, but holds his own with a heady, and technical blend of street stories and thoughtful quasi-philosophy. Paired with a foggy Clams Casino via Memphis backdrop (there’s a lot of Imogen Heap on here…) it’s as gorgeous and woozy as it is dense.
