The music video veteran returns to the silver screen.

Jonas Åkerlund — best known for music videos he has directed for The Prodigy, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and others — has signed on to direct his fourth feature film, Lords of Chaos. The film tells the story of Euronymous, the Norwegian guitarist who co-founded Mayhem and was a central figure in the world of black metal until he was murdered by Varg Vikernes (aka Burzum) in 1993.

Rory Culkin, the younger brother of Macauley and Kieran Culkin, and Caleb Landry Jones have been confirmed for unspecified leading roles (we’d hazard a guess that Culkin will play Euronymous and Jones will play Vikernes, based on physical resemblance alone). Lords of Chaos is being co-written by Dennis Magnusson and is adapted from the book of the same name; there have been various plans to adapt the book for years. [via THR]

Mayhem’s Deathcrush — “a massive fuck you to the hairspray-addled commercial rock music of the era” — appeared in FACT’s 100 Best Albums of the 1980s.
