As expected, YouTube gets in the game.

YouTube has announced YouTube Red, an ad-free subscription service that covers music and video. The service costs $9.99 a month for Android and desktop (and $12.99 for iOS devices) and allows users to save videos for offline viewing, play videos in the background and access Google Play Music.

It launches on October 28 and US users are eligible for a month-long free trial. In addition, a new YouTube Music app is in the works, but does not yet have a release date.

YouTube Red will include original programming by providers like CollegeHumor and replaces YouTube Music Key, which was in beta. [via Pitchfork]
