New music from FlyLo’s rapping alias is due in 2016.

Flying Lotus has had a busy 2015. He’s featured prominently on a stand-out record from Thundercat, formed the WOKE supergroup alongside Shabazz Palaces, scored a short film and appeared as the in-house DJ on comedian Hannibal Buress’ Why? television show. We’ve not heard too much original material though, at least not since the release of his You’re Dead! LP last year. That all looks set to change with FlyLo confirming via Twitter that new material from his Captain Murphy alias is due in 2016.

Captain Murphy is Flying Lotus’ cultish, mind-controlling rapper alter ego. The identity of Captain Murphy was originally kept a secret, however FlyLo outed himself as the madcap rapper during a 2012 interview with XXL. In that interview, he said, “I never wanted it to be this whole thing about my identity. I never wanted it that to be the case. The only think that I wanted out of it, I just didn’t want people to like try and hype it up. All of sudden, Flying Lotus is a rapper now. I felt like I had to pay my dues in that respect. I wanted to know if I was any good on the strength.”

We last heard from Captain Murphy on You’re Dead!, with FlyLo’s MC alias appearing on two tracks—’Dead Man’s Tetris’ and ‘The Boys Who Died In Their Sleep’. There are no details yet on what the Captain Murphy Project will be, but we’ll update you with all the information as it arises.
