On a day of tributes to David Bowie, this is surely one of the most poignant.

In 1976, Bowie moved to Berlin, releasing a series of albums that are known as his “Berlin trilogy”: Low, Heroes and Lodger. The title track of ‘Heroes’, one of Bowie’s most recognisable singles, tells the story of two lovers separated by the Berlin Wall.

The German foreign office, on hearing the news of Bowie’s death, tweeted: “Good-bye, David Bowie. You are now among #Heroes. Thank you for helping to bring down the #wall.”

Bowie died yesterday following an 18-month battle with cancer.
