Mozza immortalised.

The team behind forthcoming Morrissey biopic Steven, which has been in the works since May 2014, have hired their lead actor.

War & Peace actor Jack Lowden will play Morrissey in the film adaptation that focuses on Mozza’s early life, prior to him forming a songwriting partnership with Smiths cohort Johnny Marr.

Written and directed by Mark Gill, who received an Oscar nomination in 2014 for his short film The Voorman Problem, the biopic will be directed on location in Manchester from mid-April, however a release date has yet to be confirmed.

At the time of the initial announcement in 2014, Gill said: “The film covers Morrissey’s life pre-Smiths and is more of a portrait than a conventional biopic.

It’s as much a film for non-Morrissey fans as it is for die-hard devotees, but I can’t deny that this is a love letter to Steven Patrick Morrissey and the dark satanic mills of Manchester.”

Earlier this month, Morrissey told his fansite True To You that he was “very seriously” considering running for Mayor of London.
