Even if you haven’t heard Maxwell Allison’s work, you’ve probably seen it.

He’s one of the co-founders of Hausu Mountain, our second favorite label of last year and provides the incredibly distinct artwork for most of their releases. He also plays with fellow Hausu-founder Doug Kaplan and TALSounds’ Natalie Chami in Good Willsmith, a band that’s already dropped an excellent album this year. Now as if that wasn’t enough, Allison also makes solo music under the name Mukqs, which will release the new album 石の上にも三日 this Friday. Unsurprisingly, it’s great.

Like his visual designs, Mukqs’ 石の上にも三日 is a mangled blend of video game references, glitched chaos and cartoonish glee. On tracks like ‘Laughlyn’ and ‘Jellyman’s Report’, gem-like chiptunes crash into the kind of tape loop destruction you’d expect from Aaron Dilloway. It’s deeply disorienting music, but Mukqs’ often pretty passages make the daze incredibly enjoyable. Listen to the album in full below and order 石の上にも三日 on cassette March 25 via Apothecary Compositions.
