The actress will play Moz’s close friend, visual artist Linder Sterling.

Jessica Brown Findlay, best known for her work on Downton Abbey and Black Mirror, has been cast in the upcoming Morrissey biopic, Steven.

Findlay will play Linder Sterling, the iconic collage artist and best friend of the Smiths singer. In addition to her impact on UK punk music (the Buzzcocks famously commissioned her to design the cover of their debut single, ‘Orgasm Addict’), her friendship with Morrissey influenced many songs by the Smiths, most notably ‘Cemetry Gates’ which was inspired by the pair’s walks through Manchester graveyards.

The film is scheduled to begin filming this month with Jack Lowden playing the lead role of Morrissey, though no release date is clear yet.

Steven is directed and cowritten by Mark Gill, who has said the story focuses on the singer’s life prior to founding the Smiths and is “more of a portrait than a conventional biopic”.

The real Morrissey, meanwhile, has not authorized the film and is currently considering running for Mayor of London.
