The classic film will screen in theaters throughout America.

Purple Rain, the classic Oscar-winning film Prince released alongside his 1984 album of the same name, will return to theater throughout the nation this weekend.

AMC Theaters and Warner Bros. have teamed up to rerelease the film in 87 AMC locations starting today, April 22, until April 27. Carmike Theaters will also screen the film in 80 locations. Locations have been shared through Variety, who originally shared the news.

Acting as a sort of mythic retelling of the rock star’s early days, Purple Rain cast Prince as “The Kid” working the music circuit in Minneapolis with real-life backing band the Revolution. Many of the film’s iconic performances were filmed at First Avenue, a venue that Prince returned to many times throughout the years. Last night, they held an all-night dance party in honor of his legacy.

Though he was already a success in the early 1980s, it was the combined success of Purple Rain — the film, the album and the song — that rocketed Prince to a legendary status he never let go of. The project netted many accolades, including the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score (the last to win in the category in fact, it was retired next year).
