Madlib reveals new joint album is near completion.

Speaking during a rare public conversation last night in New York City, Otis “Madlib” Jackson Jr. revealed that the follow up to his 2014 album with rapper Freddie Gibbs is being finished.

According to Madlib, the new album is titled Bandana and some of the tracks were recorded using the same beat CDs shared with Kanye West during The Life of Pablo sessions. But while West was tweeting his excitement about the CDs, it appears Gibbs was rapping all over the tracks. “Six CDs. Gibbs rapped over everything,” Madlib said. “Kanye waited too long.”

Madlib and Freddie Gibbs released Piñata in 2014, via the Madlib Invazion label set up by Jackson and Egon in 2010. There is no set date for the new album yet but Gibbs took to Twitter today and seemed to confirm the album title.

Gibbs’ manager also shared a screenshot of the beat CDs on Sunday.

You can stream back part of the conversation between Madlib and Jeff Mao (via Facebook), which took place at the Grolier Club as part of the Red Bull Music Academy Festival.

During the conversation Madlib also compared the rapper DOOM to Charlie Byrd and confirmed that the previously announced Beat Konducta episode focused on industrial music was coming, featuring Jackson flipping samples of the likes of Throbbing Gristle.
