The xx also performed in public for the first time in two years on Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show.

Earlier today, The xx debuted ‘On Hold’, the first single from their upcoming album I See You. The track samples Hall & Oates’ classic ‘I Can’t Go For That’, so the intrepid lyrics-annotators at Genius reached out to Daryl Hall to find out what he thinks of the song:

“It’s always interesting to hear what somebody does with my songs,” Hall says. “After a song is written, it belongs to the world and can be interpreted anyway they want. As long as I get paid, of course. Have fun and pay me.”

‘On Hold’ was also made its live debut earlier today when the trio guested on Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show. The performance was career-spanning and included ‘Basic Space’, ‘Islands’, ‘Angels’, ‘Fiction’ and a mashup of their classic ‘Shelter’ and ‘Gosh’ from Jamie xx’s solo album In Colour. Listen to the performance and interview in full here.

The xx will perform on Saturday Night Live on November 18. I See You is out January 13, 2017 via Young Turks.
