Foxtrot Mannerisms is the new album by Pursuit Grooves, due out via Pinch’s Tectonic label this April.
Real name Vanese Smith, Pursuit Grooves programs her own beats and sings her own vocals, and the results on this album are excellent. Juxtaposing sweet, buttery vocals with shuffling, mechanical loops, Foxtrot Mannerisms is – to misquote Underground Resistance – hi-tech soul at its best, which should find favour in fans of Erykah Badu, Fatima and more.
It marks the first of Smith’s albums not to be released on her own What Rules Records labels. Coming from Tectonic, famed for their dubstep releases from Pinch, Peverelist, Joker and more, it’s a bit of a curveball but a very welcome one. As well as those past albums, Smith has contributed to Rush Hour’s Beat Dimension series.
Foxtrot Mannerisms is releaased April 5, and we’ve already played it more than we have most albums that came out in Jan.
