As regular FACT readers will know we’re a big fan of LTM’s Auteur Labels series.

This ongoing run of CD compilations celebrates the output of cult post-punk imprints such as Independent Project, New Hormones and Object Music, and offers an easy and affordable way to acquaint yourself with some amazing catalogues before you re-mortgage your house to get ’em on vinyl.

The latest Auteur Labels collection focusses on the 1990-1999 product of Robs Records, which was founded by Joy Division and New Order manager Rob Gretton. According to LTM, Robs Records was effectively the ‘Factory Dance’ label that Tony Wilson refused to back. Together with sister label Pleasure, Robs released a wide range of underground club music, helping break local artists such as Sub Sub (out of which formed Doves), Mr Scruff, Strangebrew and Digital Justice, as well as licensing imports from the likes of Roy Davis, Jr. and Beat Club (whose ‘Security’ is remixed here by New Order’s Bernard Sumner). The 77-minute compilation opens with its biggest hit, Sub Sub’s ‘Ain’t No Love (Ain’t No Use)’; you can check out snippets of all the tracks here.
