This month, Matthew Herbert released One One, the latest twist in a musical career that has featured deep house, ruthless experimentation and, er, pig slaughter.

Herbert has always been a fan of conceptual sampling, be it noises of the human body (for the album Bodily Functions) or the birth, life and death of his own home-raised Babe (future album One Pig), and One One sees him only use sounds he’s made himself, with his own voice firmly at the forefront. Album highlight ‘Milan’ was a recent Tracks of the Month pick.

Another side of Herbert’s work, of course, is his role as leader of the Matthew Herbert Big Band, a live spectacle like few others. On Wednesday June 9, Herbert will be bringing his band, featuring vocalist Eska and the Goldsmith Vocal Ensemble, to the coliseum that is London’s Matter club. Doors open at 7pm, tickets are £18.50 in advance and available here.

For a preview of what you can hope to expect, FACT and Matter bring you this high quality video of Herbert Big Band’s performance at the Barbican, last year. Tracklist can be found below the video.
