FACT can reveal that the 2011 edition of the Red Bull Music Academy will take place in Tokyo.

This Japanese outing will be the Academy’s fourteenth since its inception in Berlin in 1998. The base for a resoundingly successful RBMA 2010 was London. Here Red Bull installed a purpose-built studio and lecture room for the Academy, inviting myriad artists and musical professionals (among them Steve Reich, Matmos and Joe Boyd) to talk to participants and staging a number of one-off events around the city – including an unforgettable collaboration with FACT which saw Joy Orbison, MJ Cole, Rustie and RBMA participant Space Dimension Controller blow the roof off intimate Camden boozer The Lock Tavern.

The purpose of the Academy is first and foremost to recognise new talent in music, and to nurture it through a well-considered program of instruction, collaboration and experimentation. To mark the closing of the London chapter, RBMA have put together a collection exclusive tracks created by participants during their time at the Academy, with several contributions from studio mentors and guests such as James Pants (pictured), Dam-Funk, Modeselektor and Tony Nwachukwu. The latter teams up with Jackmaster, Mau’lin and Markur for the brilliantly titled ‘UK Hunky’, while Dam-Funk proffers an previously unreleased demo version of ‘I Need 2 Know’. There are solo originals from Space Dimension Controller and LuckyMe’s Lunice; Hudson Mohawke, Poirier, Osborne, TOKiMONSTA (Brainfeeder) are among working in collaboration.

The full tracklist for the album, which is called Various Assets: Not For Sale, is not below. It will be available digitally to all later this month, but we’ve got three gatefold double-CD copies to give away. If you’d like to be entered into the draw to win one, simply e-mail your name and the words ‘Various Assets’ to competitions@thevinylfactory.com. We’ll contact our winners by the end of this week.
