Mischievous London-Berlin duo Hype Williams this week release a storming new 7″, Do Roids & Kill E’rything, featuring their hydroponic takes on music by Drake and Sade.
Lead track ‘Ooovrrr’ pitches Drake’s vocal to nightmarish depths, couching it in reedy synths and sloppy, syncopated lo-fi rhythm, ‘Rescue Dawn’ combines warped vocals of uncertain provenance with a super-heavy but disembodied dub bassline. On the flip you get ‘The Throning’ – an undulating, oddly redemptive rework of Sade’s ‘The Sweetest Taboo’. The 7″ features artwork by Ed Lehan and is limited to 500 copies; you can listen to track samples and purchase the release here.
This is the third record Hype Williams have released this year, following the superb Han Dynasty I 7″ on De Stijl and their untitled 7-track album on Carnivals. Coming next year: a release on Hippos On Tanks, the US label that’s home to Games (featuring Oneohtrix Point Never), White Cars and Von Haze.
