Tresor will release a 2010 edition of Surgeon‘s classic Force+Form album later this month.
Originally issued in 1999 via the same Berlin-based label, Force+Form is one of the finest techno full-lengths ever to have come out of the British Isles, and consists of four tracks each around 10 minutes in duration. It’s also Surgeon’s most accomplished album to date, one that builds significantly on the visceral promise of Communications (Downwards, 1996), Basictonalvocabulary (Tresor, 1997) and Balance (Tresor, 1998): its rhythms are far more complex and engagingly funky than industrial techno’s going rate, its sinewy synth melodies are uncommonly hypnotic and there are flashes of welcome Black Country humour in its occasional samples and field recordings (is that the sound of Regis babbling about getting pissed on ‘Returning To The Purity Of Current’?)
The new 2×12″ and CD editions are part of Tresor’s extensive 2010 reissue programme, which has already seen them bring seminal LPs and compilations by Drexciya, Jeff Mills and Juan Atkins back into print. Next in line: the various artist compilations True Spirit Vol.1 (2001) and It’s Not Over (2005).
