If the above promo video is anything to go by, Austria’s Elevate Festival seem pretty convinced that you can stop wars and oil spills by putting on a rave in a big Eastern European hanger. We’re not so sure.
We are, however, pretty sure that the festival will be ace. That’s often the case when you’ve got Robert Hood, Hudson Mohawke, Terre Thaemlitz, Mount Kimbie and more playing. The below five however, are the acts we’d most strongly suggest you check out if you’re spending this weekend indulging in this festival that prides itself on being challenging.
Toro y Moi: South Carolina’s current favourite son made waves with this year’s debut album, Causers of This. An intimate, often freeform record, it’s at odds with his live show, which features live bass and drums, and is a lot louder than the shy reveries associated with Causers. Which, of course, makes it far more interesting to check out – who wants to go to a live gig knowing exactly what they want to get?
Merzbow: God knows what Masami Akita does when he plays live these days, but he’s still the go to guy when it comes to noise, with approximately a billion albums of the stuff out there. At Elevate, he’ll be accompanied by Hungarian drummer Balázs Pándi, so at least there’s a drum beat. That’s usually all you need to dance at a festival.
Actress: If you read FACT, you probably already know that we like Actress. His live show has been on in a constant state of evolution in the wake of this year’s superb Splazsh, and it’s always worth checking in to see what stage it’s at.
DJ Spinn: This would never have happened before 2010, but here you go: one of the leading lights of Chicago’s juke/footwork scene peak-time on Saturday night. It’s probably worth finding a spot at Dom Im Berg’s second room and perching all night to be honest – Spinn is sandwiched between the UK’s Girl Unit and Altered Natives, and flanked by fellow Chi-Town resident Chrissy Murderbot in what adds up to one of the festival’s best stages.
Felix Kubin: Bowlcut-sporting renaissance man of the highest order, there are few musicians as endearing eccentric at Felix Kubin, and what he does next at his live shows is anyone’s guess.
