Editions Mego have announced plans to reissue A New Way To Pay Old Debts, the acclaimed 2009 solo album by former Harry Pussy guitarist Bill Orcutt, in expanded form.

Orcutt’s raw, dizzying blues style – reminiscent of John Fahey and Derek Bailey at their most hoary and grounded – is an interesting fit for Mego, a label best known for releasing digital noise works by the likes of Pita and Florian Hecker, but more recently providing a home for synth emoters Emeralds and Oneohtrix Point Never.

A New Way To Pay Old Debts was originally issued on vinyl by Palilalia Records, Orcutt’s own private press, in a limited edition of 500. The eight tracks from the LP are included on Mego’s new CD version, along with both tracks from Orcutt’s ‘High Wasted’/’Big Ass Nails’ 7″ and four previously unreleased pieces. All the music was recorded in May and June of 2009.

“At the heart of Orcutt’s sound is a vintage acoustic Kay guitar equipped with a DeArmond pickup,” explain Mego. “After the neck was broken and subsequently repaired, the guitar was downtuned so as to withstand the tension of the strings, and played with the A and D strings removed. This all lends itsellf to an intense set of raw, blues-influenced songs that sound heavier than most of the guitar records in your collection put together!!”

The album is officially released on January 15, 2011. More info here.
