Jamie Woon this week talked to FACT about his debut album, due out next year.

A full interview with the London singer/songwriter will be published later this week, but for a taste of what to expect from next year’s LP, it’s a “pop/r’n’b album that dips into underground styles … the bass is pushed forward, and there’s quite a few ambient passages [and] loads of very long reverbs.” Woon describes the album as “melancholy”, with his voice at the centre. Tempo-wise, there’s slow jams, 140bpm gear, hip-hop and disco, inspired by the range of tempos and time signatures in Stevie Wonder’s albums. The songs have been written over the last four years.

Woon met Burial, who produced recent single ‘Night Air’ [though Jamie makes it clear that Burial wasn’t the driving force behind the tune’s sound, instead acting more “as a session musician”], through a mutual friend. The plan was originally for the whole album to be produced by Burial, but that didn’t end up happening. More collaborations are planned though.

The working title for the album is In the Middle.
