If ever there was a place that deserved a visit from the extended Honest Jon’s posse, it’s the dub-steeped city of Bristol.
The London label brings some of its brightest starts to the West Country this month, the main event being a live showcase at the quayside Arnolfini arts space on Saturday 19 February. Headlining is the Moritz von Oswald Trio – that’s Moritz with Sasu ‘Luomo’ Ripatti, Max Loderbauer and the occasional special guest. New album Horizontal Structures, forthcoming on Honest Jon’s, showcases a freer, more emotionally articulate side to the group, and their hypnotic live performances are always a treat. Joining them will be Darren Cunningham AKA Actress, whose Splazsh LP, released on the label in early 2010, was widely acclaimed as one of the year’s best, and Modern Love’s inimitable vinyl necromancers Demdike Stare, appearing in support of their epic new Triptych compilation. Tickets are priced at £10 and are available from the Arnolfini and Honest Jon’s.
The real heads will be even more drawn to the previous night’s “45 session” at the intimate Take 5 Cafe in Stokes Croft. Moritz will be making a special appearance – along with long-time collaborator Tikiman, Honest Jon’s label head Mark Ainley and in-house designer (and Trilogy Tapes founder) Will Bankhead – to spin their reggae, dub and dancehall wares. The pooled record collection of these guys is literally priceless; we can pretty much guarantee you won’t hear a better soundsystem rinse-out this year. Tickets for this unmissable gathering, priced £8, are also available from both the Arnoflini and Honest Jon’s.
