The Terminal Symphony is the name of the of the new album by Rene Hell.

Rene Hell is Jeff Witscher, one of the US underground’s most unpredictable talents – one minute he’s making corrosive power electronics for Hospital Productions as Roman Torment (with Evan Pacewicz), the next he’s crafting queasy acid techno for 100% Silk as Cuticle (with Daren Ho). He operates under an ever-growing number of different aliases, but it’s as Rene Hell that he’s made the biggest impression. 2010 saw the release of Hell’s Porcelain Opera, an exquisite homage to German kosmische and the lighter, more plaintive side of 80s industrial.

Though there have been other Rene Hell releases since – most notably a split LP with Pete Swanson, Waiting For The Ladies – it’s fair to describe The Terminal Symphony as the formal follow-up to Porcelain Opera. It’s available this week courtesy of Type on limited white vinyl (with amazing girl-with-chainsaw cover art), along with a bonus 40-minute CD of additional material. It occupies similar musical territory to its predecessor but, as its title suggests, comes across as more composed and narrative-minded. Though the music is grounded in pulsating synthesis, the track names allude to classical music and instrumentation – ‘Detuned Clarinet’, ‘Cello Suite No.3’, ‘Juliard Op’, ‘Adagio For String Portrait’, ‘Chamber Forte’, etc.
