Dylan Ettinger’s drift-jazz, future-cop-movie concept LP New Age Outlaws (Director’s Cut) was one of 2010’s finest albums, and its maker returns this week with a new 7″ single, ‘Lion of Judah’.

Available on Not Not Fun and backed with ‘Baptism’, it takes a tougher, more rhythmic route than his previous material, layered with sickly, arcing synths that put us in mind of Ettinger’s labelmate Xander Harris or perhaps even Actress’s Detroit derivations, droney vocals and seriously dubbed-out drums that come over like a more hi-fidelity riposte to that LA Vampires & Zola Jesus record from last year. Being less new age and more no wave, it also puts us in mind of that amazing, out-of-nowhere ‘It Slipped Her Mind’ 10″ by Sandra Electronics (Regis and Silent Servant), albeit pitched down from a gallop to a more psychedelic sashay.

Above is the official, apparently Caravaggio-inspired video by Nathan Vollmar and William Winchester Claytor, providing a fitting visual corollary to Ettinger’s synth fetishism. The 7″ is availaboe now in a limited edition of 360, housed in a sleeve designed by Amanda Brown.

Tracklist:
A1. Lion of Judah
