Cash Askew of Bay Area dream-pop band Them Are Us Too has been confirmed as one of the victims who died in the tragic warehouse fire in Oakland on Friday night (December 2). At least 33 people have now been confirmed dead as a result of the blaze, and many more are still unaccounted for.

The converted warehouse, known as the Ghost Ship, was a performance space and artists’ studio that was hosting an event for Golden Donna’s 100% Silk west coast tour, also featuring another two label acts, Cherushii and Nackt.

In a press release, the label and band’s management team said: “Cash Askew was an absolutely loved and treasured member of the Dais Records family.” They continued, “we were in awe of her talent, her gentle kindness, and her creative momentum. … Her passing is an excruciating loss that we may never fully process or recover from.”

Them Are Us Too’s debut album came Remain came out on Dais Records last year and the LA-based label has paid tribute to the late artist in a Facebook post, also updating its profile picture with a black and white photograph of Askew. It is still unclear what caused the fire, though the safety record of the building has been called into question. There were no sprinklers and the only way out of the second floor was a makeshift stairwell made of pallets, according to the LA Times. Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said on Sunday that she had “activated the criminal investigation team.”

A relief fund for the victims has raised more than $215,000, while the search for bodies continues. [via Pitchfork]
