The week’s best mixes: MF Doom, Ghost Ship tribute and emotional landscapes

Each week, FACT trawls through the untamed world of free mixes, radio specials and live blends so you don’t have to.

This week, MF Doom graces the long-running Solid Steel mix series with his otherworldly presence, Maya Kalev delivers the first of her Emotional Landscapes show for NTS and Lukas Wigflex reps the Nottingham club scene. Elsewhere, some of Quavo’s best features of 2016 have been lovingly blended together and there’s a beautifully crafted tribute mix to the victims of Oakland’s devastating warehouse fire.

MF Doom
Snake Charmer mix (Solid Steel)

We’re still waiting for that MF DOOM and Ghostface Killah collaborative album to drop, but this mix for Solid Steel gives us hope that the masked rapper might be emerging with new music soon. Adopting his King Geedorah alias, the mix features unreleased cuts from Paul Barman and Hassan Chop alongside a new remix of JJ DOOM’s ‘Banished’, which samples DJ Khaled.

DJML
Information Overload: Ghost Ship tribute mix

The devastating fire at Oakland’s Ghost Ship warehouse claimed the lives of dozens of artists, musicians and organisers from the city’s tight-knit creative scene, a scene already forced to the margins and now tragically stripped of some of its most crucial figures. “This community is essentially a bottomless well of expressive, enthusiastic experimentation,” as DJML, aka The Globule, puts it. His tribute mix for KALX FM digs into the “nooks and crannies of the diverse and inspiring body of work left behind by those we’ve lost,” featuring 100% Silk affiliates Nackt and Cherushii, Cash Askew’s Them Are Us Too, Joey Casio’s Obsidian Blade and more.

Maya Kalev
Emotional Landscapes (NTS Radio)

The always on-point taste of writer, promoter and friend-of-the-show Maya Kalev has finally been given a public outlet with Emotional Landscapes on NTS Radio, the first episode of which aired this week. The title is instructive; leaning on frosty minimalism, outsider voices and wilting strings, it’s a satisfyingly deep hour of (mostly new) music.

Elz the DJ
Featuring Quavo (No Regular Party)

As Southern Hospitality’s rap and R&B column has noted this year, Migos member Quavo has had a killer year, guesting on tracks from artists such as 2 Chainz, Lil Yachty and Young Thug. This mix collects his best features from 2016, including his appearances on Post Malone’s ‘Congratulations’ and DJ Mustard’s ‘Want Her’. Proof that we need a Quavo solo album in 2017.

Lukas Wigflex
Stamp The Wax mix

Nottingham don Lukas Wigflex has been running his Wigflex club night and putting out releases for 10 years now so he certainly knows his way around the city’s close-knit scene. “Whether you’re rich, poor, white, black, tartan, gay, straight…in Nottingham you will find all manner of creatures sweating it out alongside each other on a dancefloor,” he tells Stamp the Wax. This mix offers a window into Wigflex’s spaced-out soundtracks, while folding in a number of cuts from local Notts producers on-the-up, including Medicut and Croft.
