Raw techno from the American DJ and performance artist.

New Yorker Lady Starlight is to release her debut EP, Untitled, on Lucy’s Berlin-based Stroboscopic Artefacts label.

Set to drop on 19 May, Untitled comprises four tracks of stripped-down, pounding industrial techno designed to be “full-spectrum audio warfare”, culminating in the frantic percussive judder of ‘F8’.

Lady Starlight has been Lady Gaga’s opening DJ on three of the pop star’s world tours. The pair’s friendship dates back to Gaga’s early New York club days, when they co-hosted a weekly party called New York Street Revival and Trash Dance. Gaga has since credited Starlight – who is also behind some of the singer’s eye-catching outfits – as one of her club scene “muses” and the catalyst for her own interest in performance art.

Techno don Surgeon also counts Starlight as a long-standing collaborator, calling her “the techno sister that I was separated from at birth”. Their working relationship dates back to a Gaga show at which he was in attendance; following her opening techno set, Starlight gave him a shout-out. In 2014, she brought Surgeon out as a special guest on Gaga’s ArtRave tour, the first of several collaborative live performances with him.
