Since he first caught our eye in late 2008, and recorded a terrific FACT mix in mid-2009, Detroit’s Kyle Hall has forged quite a reputation for himself.
Following a run of sterling EP releases on his own Wild Oats label and Omar-S’s FXHE, Hall got the opportunity to remix Darkstar’s tearjerking anthem ‘Aidy’s Girl’s A Computer’ for Hyperdub. Following that well-received effort, next week Hall releases an original 12″ of his own on Hyperdub. A-side ‘Kaychunk’ teams techno-esque arpeggios with shuffling, syncopated drums and frenetic beeps, while on the flip ‘You Know What I Feel’ places exuberant Dam-Funk-esque synths and airy strings to a stepping off-garage rhythm. Despite bearing the hallmarks of many contemporary UK productions, there’s something irrepressibly American, and therefore unpredictable, about these tracks.
Hall will follow the release of ‘Kaychunk’/’You Know What I Feel’ with a brand new EP for Third Ear. Third Ear is a label that has long been a UK stronghold for Detroit sounds, releasing work from the likes of Theo Parrish, Norm Talley and Delano Smith as well as homegrown talent like Wbeeza. The Kyle Hall EP, his first for this imprint, is entitled Must See, and it’s due out on April 19.
Furthermore, Hall has remixed ‘Dressed In Dresden’ by Warp-signed Brooklyners The Hundred In The Hands, for a 12″ and download release out April 5 (this release also features a remix by Various, which you can download gratis here).
