Music Unlimited’s cheapest price is available to owners of the Echo speaker.

Amazon has launched its new Spotify rival, Music Unlimited, in the UK, offering listeners access to 40 million songs for as little as £3.99 a month.

Launched in the US in October, Amazon Music Unlimited offers UK customers the same three price tiers: £9.99 a month for regular users, £7.99 a month for Amazon Prime subscribers and £3.99 a month for owners of the company’s Echo speaker.

The Echo device, which features Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant, allows users to select tracks and playlists, pause and search for new music based on mood using voice control. It also controls connected home devices such as lights and thermostats.

Amazon’s price point of £3.99 for Music Unlimited will make the Echo speaker very attractive to those who think Spotify and Apple Music’s £9.99 a month are too expensive. However, at £149.99, listeners would have to commit to the service for just under two years to start seeing any savings.

Music Unlimited isn’t the first streaming service to be launched by Amazon, which already has Prime Music available to Prime subscribers. But Prime Music has a much more limited catalogue – only 2 million tracks.

Even with a £3.99 price point, Amazon faces an uphill struggle to gain a foothold in the streaming business. Spotify now has over 40 million paid subscribers, with Apple Music on 17 million.
