Dopplereffekt’s Heinrich Mueller has teamed up with singer/composer Victoria Lukas for a new collaborative audio-visual project, Zerkalo.

This week sees the release of two 12-inch EPs by Zerkalo, both on Clone Records‘ new sub-label Aqualong, dedicated to the legacy of Detroit electro myth-makers Drexciya (of which Mueller, real name Gerald Donald, was almost certainly an active member).

Mueller has never confirmed his role in Drexciya, and since 1995 has been primarily associated with his Dopplereffekt and Arpanet projects. Combining stone-cold Detroit electro/techno sounds and aesthetic preoccupations with, er, eugenics, totalianiarism and particle physics, Dopplereffekt’s wonderfully severe records are pretty much all classics; the Gesamtkunstwerk compilation, first released on International Deejay Gigolos in 1999 and later re-issued by Clone Classic Cuts, is the best introduction to their work. Currently a duo comprised of Mueller and Michaela To-Nhan Bertel, Dopplereffekt remain a shadowy entity but have recently broken cover to play a run of live shows (see picture above) and this month gave their first ever face-to-face interview in The Wire.

Last month Mueller’s sound found a whole new audience when his mind-bending remix of Rustie‘s ‘Zig Zag’ was included on the 12" release of the Glaswegian producer’s Bad Science EP.

New York-based Victoria Lukas is less familiar to us, though a note on her website informs us that she has previously made music under the names Inkamera and Weitgeist. Apparently Zerkalo is "an ongoing musical experiment built around a synthesis of the scientific precision of Heinrich Mueller’s work and Victoria Lukas’ lyricism."

The note continues: "Through the coupling of electronic music and video art, Zerkalo became a vessel for reconstruction and sublimation of memories, reflections and visions into audio visual dream world."

Right then. Visitors to Zerkalo’s site can listen to three new tracks – ‘Invisible’, ‘How Difficult It Is’ and ‘I Know More’ – which give a good overview of the Zerkalo sound (think dark, trippy electroclash and you’re basically there). You can also watch two specially made videos, each directed by Julia Pello. Still want more? The Zerkalo YouTube channel features a further seven videos.

Zerkalo’s name is most likely a reference to Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1975 film of the same name, a cryptic meditation on Russian national identity. ‘Zerkalo’, incidentally, translates as "mirror". The first two Zerkalo EPs, Stoi Storoni Zerkala Pt.1 and Stoi Storoni Zerkala Pt.2 are out now via Clone. Zerkalo will perform a live show at La Zone in Liege, Belgium on October 9.
